Bear attack in Churchill, Manitoba (Canada)

November 15th, 2008 |

I’ve just been made aware of an email which has been circulating about a bear attack in Manitoba. It claims to contain a graphic picture of a nonfatal bear attack. Here is the text of the email:

Bear Attack in
Churchill
,
Manitoba
,
Canada
.

These are pictures of an actual polar bear attack in Churchill.

These pictures were taken while people watched and could do nothing to stop
the attack.

Reports from the local newspaper say that the victim will make a full
recovery.

The photo’s are below.

Warning, graphic photos!!!

In case anybody who receives this email is concerned that it’s a virus, don’t worry–it isn’t. I’m including the picture from the email and, I must say, I’m a little underwhelmed by the carnage. Here’s the picture.

2008 Zoo Trip

October 11th, 2008 |

Today we went to the zoo in DC. Here is an incomplete list of animals we saw and my personal feelings on them:

  1. Pandas – AWESOME
  2. Lions – sweet
  3. Tigers – similar to lions
  4. Anaconda – scary/sweet
  5. King Cobra – deadly (stay away from these)
  6. Prairie dog – opposite of (5)
  7. Elephants – Very large and friendly. These were the Asiatic variety.
  8. Cow – I felt bad about my lunch
  9. Orang utan – Me 10,000,000 – 100,000,000 years ago
  10. HIPPO – wet

Thomas Doerflein, the best friend a bear could have

September 23rd, 2008 |

Writing for this website is a true joy. Usually. But, along with writing about great animal-related events comes the responsibiity of covering the tragedies. With over 14,000 site views, it is my sad duty to report that Knut’s loving keeper has died.

No one knows the cause of death yet and we should all just take time to mourn and remember. And we can’t blame Knut-it’s highly unlikely he had anything to do with it and he’s mourning too.

Here’s the story on CNN.

RIP Doerflein.

Green Polar Bears

Stop what you’re doing and go here now. I found this article on CNN and am utterly stunned. I would write more, but I’m going to go look into the mirror and contemplate my own color.

Dolphin tragedy

April 28th, 2008 |

You know, being me isn’t all fun and games all of the time. Reporting on worldwide zoological events is extremely rewarding and just knowing that we are the most complete, accurate and interesting animal-news website on the net helps me wake up enthused and rested every morning. Some nights I don’t even sleep.

But with great power comes great responsibility, so it is my sad but necessary duty to report that a dolphin has died. Sharky, as he was affectionately known, was mortally wounded during an aerial feat at Sea World, FL. Rest in peace, slippery prince. Rest in peace. You will be remembered always. Below is a tribute to dolphins and I think it’s only appropriate that we all watch it. Gather the family around, or whatever you have in your house/burrow and click the triangle and let yourself be taken away to an underwater paradise.

Katja the giraffe is walking

April 28th, 2008 |

I guess there’s this baby giraffe in Germany that just started walking. Over-all I have positive feelings about this event. I’m glad when any giraffe learns to walk. Unfortunately the only video is on CNN and, since they’re losers, I can’t embed it. So, until I can get footage of Katja, here’s a sweet ice cream cone being eaten by an even sweeter giraffe!

The year of the polar bear

March 1st, 2008 |

We all know the Chinese are wrong about everything and this is no exception. 2008 is the year of the rat? I don’t think so. 2008 is the year of the polar bear. It is a great honor to present to the world this bear:

After Knut, Flocke and now this new cub, Germany would be a pretty sweet place to visit (for the zoos). I’m sure there will be more information on this little fellow to come and it will be right here.

Giraffe born in the UK!

February 1st, 2008 |

Some zoo in the UK has a SWEET new giraffe. Margret is very small for a giraffe, standing only about 5′ tall. But that doesn’t stop her from raging. Right now, CNN has the best video of Margret but, unfortch, it hasn’t shown up on youtube yet. Here’s a link. Youtube DOES have a video of Margret. It’ll have to do for now.

New Panda in Vienna, Austria!

February 1st, 2008 |

Pandas are probably the most popular bear in the world but the suffer from low libido/ED. So, it isn’t surprising that panda cubs are few and far between. And that makes it even more exciting when one is born. Today is a happy day, my friends. A really happy one.

As the most comprehensive and well respected bear-oriented webpage in the universe, it is our honor to introduce bear lovers worldwide to Fu Long:
