4 legs, 4 ears, 1 bad attitude

August 22nd, 2008 |

I don’t want to alarm anyone, but the Daily Mail is reporting that a 4-eared CAT has been spotted. It’s terrifying and I feel that I am the only person who can properly care for it. So, please, if the current owners would just email me at tom@bearscare.org with the subject line “4 EAR CAT” (I get tons of mail) it would be great.

Good news: more pandas!

August 17th, 2008 |

This is amazing. Two new pandas have been born in China. They look like this (courtesy of National Geographic):

The truth about pelicans

August 12th, 2008 |

As this page establishes itself as a true colossus of the internet with TEN THOUSAND page loads, I would like to take a moment to discuss pelicans. Today, a pelican landed on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA, stopping traffic for a long time. This is the best thing that’s ever happened to that bridge.

I first noticed pelicans while photographing crabs and flying men in North Carolina earlier this summer. They captured my imagination and also the imaginations of generations before me–the graceful wings, the dump-truck beak–they’re probably just the best birds. Here’s a picture of one from Wikipedia’s article on them.

Also, Pelican is a pretty great band.

I think pelicans were featured in The Flintstones, which is fine. But I could be wrong about that.

Mutt chases bear

August 10th, 2008 |

More bear news. I don’t have much to say about this, but I’m just putting here to be complete. Here’s what happened:

  • Mom hears dog barking
  • Dad finds out dog had chased bear up a tree
  • Little kid claims the dog had jumped on the bear and “chewed it”

It’s HIGHLY unlikely the bear would put up with a dog chewing on it. What’s much more likely is the peace-loving bear just wanted to avoid conflict and knew he couldn’t reason with the dog on the ground.

Guinea Pig Parade of Tears

August 7th, 2008 |

This is absolutely tragic. These sickos in Peru dress up their Guinea pigs, take them out for parade and slaughter them. And then they eat them right then and there. Hey! I have an idea! Let’s take a bunch of PEOPLE and parade them down Broadway and eat them. How about that?

Grizzly 1, Moose 0

August 5th, 2008 |

This has been a great summer for the bears. Two black bear attacks (one fatality), me seeing black bears, a baby bear with burned feet . . . and now this:

Here’s how my mornings start. I wake up, fall back asleep, wake up again and look out the window for bears. But guess what? I never see them–lame. I would kill to live somewhere where this could happen (like Alaska).

There goes my eye

This lady is really lucky. She was attacked by a black bear and survived. See, black bears are very intelligent and they know there is very little to be gained from attacking humans. And if one does get angry enough to attack, they’re pretty easy to reason with. So, whatever she did to rage this bear must have been pretty bad. Once they decide to attack, they usually don’t stop until the job is done.

Monster sighted in NY

August 4th, 2008 |

You’re going to be hearing about this one a lot, so remember you heard it here first.

Here’s what happened. Some kids were walking down the Montauk beach (that’s in New York, USA) and they found this horrible creature:

No one is really sure who or what it is. Some say it’s a turtle without its shell, but that’s stupid. Others say it’s a dog. Idiots. It’s clear to me this is either a new species or a hybrid, with the latter being most likely. Case closed.
