If you think bear attack is ultra rare, that's because you think it is, because biologists (I'm a doctor so I belong to this group of people in a way but I think they're wrong, the bear population is rising) want you to think bear is not usually aggressive. But this year in 2008, more than 100 bear attacks have taken place in Canada. Sometimes the bear is only charging, sometimes people are not wounded but scared (bear spray, firearms have saved life) sometimes people are wounded. Sadly, between 2 to 5 people are killed every year in Canada. Not that much you'd say ? But this number will be increasing in the years to come...

No matter what you think, bear and humans can't coexist in the same place. There is no way you can predict how a bear will react when facing humans. But the government doesn't want people to be afraid. So they don't speak out about the real danger. If you ask whether you should carry a bearspray, the answer you get is "bears are not really showing up, " Nothing to get people scared. Then, all of a sudden, a bear is heading towards you... and there you remember the ridiculous piece of advice you were given by people from provincial and national parks.

So, I'm sorry but a bear is cute animal, but also a deadly weapon. Without bearspray you stand no chance against it. I think many people have been very lucky to survive so far.

More recently a bear was walking down the streets in Saguenay (population 100000) The mayer got the bear killed. But journalists were angry : "poor little bear, how can you ? " The mayor said to a journalist from Montreal "a black bear is not a dog, this bear could have killed children"

He was right.
